Considering in Georgia?
Georgia’s an historic state. You’ll like going through training here if you’re interested in American history. This state was one of the original Thirteen Colonies and battles were fought here during the Civil War.
You’ll find a variety of scenery here. There are mountains in the north and beaches on the coast. Summers here are humid and hot. The state’s precipitation is moderate in some areas and heavy in others. The winters are usually mild.
Atlanta is the largest city in the state with over 500,000 residents. Fifty-one percent of the visitors to Georgia in 2009 visited Atlanta.
There are a number of historic sites and museums in the Atlanta area. You can spend a lot of time learning about history at the Atlanta History Center. There are two historic homes and a museum here. The house at the Smith Family Farm was built in the 1840s. Costumed guides lead tours of the house. The Swan House is a restored mansion that was built in 1928. The museum’s Civil War collections display weapons, uniforms and other artifacts. You can see the Battle of Atlanta that was fought during the Civil War in a panoramic display at the Atlanta Cyclorama & Civil War Museum.
The World of Coca-Cola is one of the Atlanta museums. You’ll see artifacts related to Coca-Cola and have a chance to sample beverages from around the world. The Michael C. Carlos Museum has artifacts from ancient Greece, ancient Rome and ancient Egypt. The APEX Museum has displays on African American history.
Other places to visit in Atlanta include Zoo Atlanta, the Atlanta Botanical Garden and the Centennial Olympic Park. The park has fountains, walking paths and gardens.
The second largest city in the state is Augusta with approximately 200,000 residents. Augusta is about 145 miles east of Atlanta. This city was founded in 1735 and is one of the oldest cities in the state.
You can see historic sites dating back to the 18th century if you’re furthering your education in Augusta. George Walton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, lived at Meadow Garden. This house was built during the late 18th century. Furniture, paintings and porcelain from the 18th and 19th centuries are on display here. The Ezekiel Harris House was built in 1797. A tour of this house will give you an idea of what life was like during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. You can learn more about Augusta’s history by taking a guided boat tour on the Augusta Canal.
There are some historic streets near the Augusta Riverwalk on the Savannah River. Greene Street has large houses dating back to the 19th century and there are old commercial buildings on Broad Street. There are shops and restaurants at the Riverwalk. Spacious walkways wind past gardens and fountains.
