You’ll enjoy obtaining further education in Mississippi if you like mild winters. Winter temperatures in this humid state don’t go much below 45 degrees. There is only a little snow in the northern and central parts of the state. Temperatures during the summer will go up to 85 degrees. This state is mostly flat with low elevations. Approximately 20 million people visit the state every year.

Jackson is the largest city in the state. There are a lot of things you can do in this city while you’re in training here. American settlers moved into the area in the 19th century and you’ll be able to tour historic sites in the city. The Dupree House was built as a structure with three rooms in the 1850s. It later developed into a plantation home. The Oaks House Museum is in a house that was built around 1853.

You can learn more about local history by visiting some of the Jackson museums. The City of Jackson Fire Museum and Public Fire Safety Education Center has displays on the history of the Jackson Fire Department. The Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center celebrates the accomplishments of African Americans in the Jackson area. The Old Capitol Museum is in a building that is the former seat of the state’s government. This displays in this museum focus on the building and events that occurred in it. One of these events was the state’s secession from the Union in 1861.

Other museums in Jackson are the Museum of Natural Science, the Agriculture & Forestry Museum and the Museum of Art. The Museum of Art is in downtown Jackson where there are a lot of things to see and do. The Arts Center of Mississippi in the downtown area is home to the Mississippi Opera, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and the Ballet Mississippi. You’ll have a chance to see Sky Shows and learn astronomy at the Russell C. Davis Planetarium.

There are a number of attractive outdoor places to visit in the Jackson area. Highland Village is an outdoor shopping center with courtyards and fountains. You can see over 700 animals at the Jackson Zoo. The Mynelle Gardens have flowers, pathways, pools, bridges and a pond. LeFleur’s Bluff has places for camping, fishing and picnicking. There are nature trails and a golf course in the park. Roosevelt State Park is about 30 miles from Jackson. You’ll be able to go swimming, fishing and water skiing here. You can see the Bienville National Forest from the park’s overlook.
