Multi Engine Time Building Training

Several options are available

By Kyle Garrett

multi engine time building trainingWhile buying a block of time and flying off into the sunset solo will definitely build your multi-engine time, there is another way, and many of today's schools require their planes to be operated this way. An emerging trend in multi-engine time building is to pair up pilots in the program. Here's how it works. You will be paired up with another time-building pilot for the duration of the "block" of time you purchase. All flights will be operated under VFR. One pilot will be flying under the hood while the other is acting as safety pilot. The advantage of this arrangement is that both pilots can log time as pilot in command, and the flying pilot can even apply portions of the flight towards instrument currency requirements. Traditional Multi Engine Time Building

The more traditional time-building program is much more simple... you purchase a block of time, perform a checkout in the aircraft, and then you're off on your adventure either VFR or IFR. Other companies promote unusual time building opportunities. For example, one operation offers 'round the world time building trips in a King Air.

Multi Engine Time Building - Do You Need It?

Pilots who's ultimate goal is to fly for a living must earn their multi engine time building as a matter of fact. However, the vast majority of private pilots do not have to get the multi engine time building, and most don't. However, as pilots, we've all heard that earning your multi engine time building will make you a better pilot, and it's true. If you get the chance to earn your rating, do it.

Other factors to consider during your multi-engine time building training include whether or not your block rates include fuel, how many hours a day you can fly, how far away from the home base you can take the aircraft, whether overnight trips are allowed, and if aircraft renter's insurance is a requirement. Some time-building operations even offer discounted hotel rates at the home base as well as some destinations.
